‘Mr Andrew Clyde and family lived – next door to a wonderful builder’s yard which contained many articles useful to a boy’s antics. The very old family of Clyde Builders goes back for many generations in Peebles; they were first-class stonemasons and hewers of whinstone and freestone. Their work can be seen all over town and country and further afield. The present proprietor, James Clyde has a prosperous business and employs a large number of men; he has built most of the privately owned and council houses in the town and county. They are all of outstanding quality and appearance. His grandfather had the contract to widen Tweed Bridge, which stands today as an example, for all to see, of the skill of the mason of those days. It was said that anyone who served their apprenticeship with Clyde could get a job anywhere in the world – and many did.’
